  • 100 years ago yesterday, the Titanic sunk
  • Eclair floats away…
  • National database aims to catch smartphone thieves. U.S. mobile operators will ban any phone or 3G/4G tablet reported stolen from their networks and will work together to ensure that thieves don’t simply transfer stolen devices to a competitor’s service. The GSM database will be set up by October 31st, the LTE database in 2013. Senator Schumer (D-NY) hopes to introduce legislation to criminalize changing the IMEI number, in the same way changing the VIN number on a car is illegal. 
  • Commodore founder Jack Tramiel died at the age of 83. Tramiel was a Holocaust survivor who emigrated to the U.S. in 1947 and joined the army, where he learned to repair typewriters, founding Commodore Portable Typewriter. Commodore moved from typewriters to adding machines to digital calculators to home computers. Tramiel left Commodore in 1984, and bought the consumer division of Atari. The Commodore 64 and Tramiel were responsible for driving down the price of personal computers.

    • The court case between Oracle and Google began today, regarding licensing of code. It is the only patent case regarding Android that seems to directly advise Google as a defendant.
