Android Buffet moves to a new streaming server and Guru buys a boatload of new equipment.

Show Notes

  • The streaming server migrates to a third-party host. What should we play the rest of the time?
  • Are you waiting for Google Drive?
  • Platform News
    • iHome decides to make Android accessories.
    • Tablets second most popular way to watch TV says Viacom study. The survey questioned 2,500 on where and how they watched full-length TV shows, and found that 15 percent of people’s total viewing now occurs on tablets. The change has largely been at the expense of computer viewers.
    • Mobile content and ad sales to hit $67 billion in 2012.
    • Larry Page said Android wasn’t ‘critical’ for Google, because before Android’s arrival, competing operating systems used Google search and other services.
    • Cyanogen brings new build servers online.
    • State of New York sues Sprint for more than $300m, claims carrier failed to bill customers for $100m in taxes. State attorney general Eric Schneiderman claims they didn’t collect taxes to make its service less expensive and compete with AT&T and Verizon. Seems suspicious as no one advertises cell phone costs with taxes included.
    • Google Cloud Print now can print to a Fedex office and can generate a PDF that will open in Chrome for Android(if you have it)
    • Google’s legal slides paint Oracle as Gold Digger and Java as free and open software. The case hinges on whether if a language is free and open, if the APIs to use it are also open.
    • The Google Play Store has a Customer Support Line.
    • Twitter vows not to join patent wars, the company will not use any patents derived from employee inventions in offensive lawsuits without the inventor’s permission.
  • Roaming
    • WSJ explores why Roaming Charges overseas are so high. Carriers claim they have to negotiate, but the EU has declared roaming charges have “outrageous” profit margins, and is about to cap roaming charges.
    • Verizon announces $25 for 100mb plan, still a ripoff, but an improvement over 50mb for $30.
    • Better off getting a prepaid plan
