Mac 20 Questions: Trying new software

I was listening to the podcast by Victor Cajiao The Typical Mac User Podcast and he was interviewing the author JC Hutchins. I was a bit miffed because I had beeing trying to get in contact with him to ask if I could interview him for the Writers 20 Questions Podcast and also for Mac 20 Questions. I had heard he is a Mac user and that turns out to be correct. Never mind though because I may still get to talk to him about his 7th Son podcasted story and his new stuff too.

Chuck Joiner who has said will be on the Mac 20 Q show soon was talking to the developer of Twitterlator Pro. He sounded very interesting and really excited by his work in progress on the Twitter client for the iPhone. From the things he was saying could be done with it I decided to get it. I think it was about four Euro, so not a huge pile of cash.

I do already have Tweetie on the iPhone and it was also a paid application but I really need goups and it seems that Twittelator has has sub groups which is that same thing. I did set up a group of my Mac buddies but for some reason it disappeared and I had to start again. I was also struggling to find how I was able to add more Tweeps to the subgroups after the initial set up. I will have to send in a request if I don’t find the information in the help files.

It does work well in terms of being able to drill down through Twitter, from whatever starting point, a tweep, a tweet or what ever, you can keep going deeper to get a next level of information. Find who is being followed by that person, see his/her tweets, in fact you can keep on going until you find yourself back where you started. Disappear up your own exhaust pipe as it were.

Most definately fuller featured than Tweetie and so far I like it. It just has a longer learning curve that’s all. Not necesarily a steeper curve as it is quite easy to use but longer due to all of the hidden features.

I got my email in fron the developer of ShoveBox, the software I won off the MacCore podcast. I like it so far, dragging and dropping a selection of text onto the icon in the menu bar is good. I expect there must be a key combination also that I have yet to find that will do the same thing. It would be great if it does do that.

Not having a lot of time to use my Macs at the moment due to working all hours under the sun at the campsite, and having to suffer the indignity of using a shitty Windows box. The keyboard is crap and the only thing that has been interesting is the chance to try out Chrome. Chrome is OK, it does the job.

While I was at home at lunch time I rang up my youngest son in Ireland and he was pleased to tell me that he bought a MacBookPro. He got it for a good price from the refurb section on the Apple Store and was also able to get a student discount too. His older brother bought a new MacBookPro last week, the 2.66 Ghz version with the 2 video cards and the SD card slot. Has has been pretty pleased with it so far. The young one Jack will be using the computer to do his art work, using Photoshop and a Wacom tablet, an Intuos 3. The older son has his for editing video from his Sony EX1 video camera.

It would be great to get my wife on a Mac now. I am working on it, just got her an iPod Touch for her birthday, a 16GB model and I spent some time and money putting on a few games to start with and the next thing will be to put on some applications. I helped her set up the mail so that comes in to her on the iPod, still have another email account that wasn’t so easy to set up. I would recommend to her that a gmail account would be a better idea and then set up the email accounts to forward the incoming mails. Then she would have only one place to look for all of the mail. Easy then to set up the Mail app to sort out where the mail has come from.

I was really pleased to get an interview with Cameron Banga of College Kid App, which is a team of college student that have begun a project to make an iPhone Application. Seems like a brilliant idea when if you get an app that takes the world by storm off iTunes, you could make a pile of cash.

Here is a FAQ on the lads that are working together to make the application and a here is the ‘meet the team‘ page

Part of the idea behind the project is to help other people learn how to do it by seeing what steps they have to go through to get to the finish line of having an application to sell. Here’s a list of some of our more important articles.

Of course as per usual we chatted about all things Mac and you will have to listen to the podcast to find out what was talked about. Naturally the conversatioin would gravitate towards the making of iPhone applications a little. I am really looking foward to finding out what they come up with. One of the things we mentioned is the podcast series put out by Stanford the university, it is a set of videos of the actual lessons showing how to make an iPhone Application. Some if not all of the instructors being Apple software engineers. Not bad eh. Here is the iTunes link so you can get it and make your own iPhone application.

In the ramble I explain some of my grumpiness which was displayed in a few tweets one morning. I got out of the wrong side of the bed and was a cranky geek. GazMaz reckoned that it was appropriate I was listening to John C Dvorak while walking my dog that day.

Mac 20 Questions: Mac20Q Podcast 45 Donato Esposito

In this interview I am talking to Donato Espositio. A Brummie of Italian extraction. He arrived at school knowing only italian because he only spoke italian at home. Now Italian is the second language and he speaks pure Brummie, to the extent of using the word Brummie as his signature and brand name. He goes by the name of BostinBloke on Twitter Get Your Twitter Productivity Tools Here and also iBostin. On his web site he has had professors explaining the origins of the word Bostin which apparently goes back to Shakespearean times. Who would have expected that then?

Donato gave a demonstration of his iFart app on the iPhone. Well he told me that it was using the application, it could have been live I suppose but we had better not go into that, at least he wasn’t complaining of any smells happening at the time. No – I believe him honest, really, cross my fart, I mean heart.

Donato has met the BBC presenter of the One Show Adrian Childs because he was filmed wearing one of the famous Bostin T shirts while covering the European football championship. Adrian is obviously proud of his West Midland heritage too. Naturally the conversation skirted around the football teams of the area seeing as Adrian is a Baggies fan, for his sins.

Donato has recently switched to the Mac and came in via seeing the one on one presentations that his son was having as part of learning to use his Mac. He also has a nephew that makes music on a Mac using Garageband. I was only a matter of time before Donato succumbed, and got down and dirty with iPhoto and the rest of iLife. He has spent many an happy hour putting in the names to the faces and is very fond of the geographic features implemented with the Geo tagging of photos from his camera. Ah! Happy days.

Not a huge podcast listener but has promised to at least to subscribe to this on in iTunes. What?? He hasn’t done that already?

I recommended the back up strategy as I use myself, Time Machine for the day to day backing up, followed by a once a week SuperDuper and the belt and braces is the important files being saved to the cloud using Mozy and DropBox. 2 GB of space available on each of those services for free. It doesn’t get much better than free does it.

Mac 20 Questions: Wizardgold News Podcast June 12th

Busy time here but I managed to record a podcast. I would have done it with video for the Wizardgold News but went with audio because I started to record after the light was gone and I don’t like the image you get when working with lights rather than natural light. Although if I was to use my video camera rather than the iSight camera I could have made some adjustments I suppose. Then again there are video adjustments possible in iMovie also.

Any way the upshot is that I did it in audio only. I recorded and turned it into a podcast in Amadeus again. The second podcast all done in Amadeus and I like it. Slight different way of working that’s all.

I talk about using a service called Knowem to be able to quickly see where I have my user name out there. It checks about 120 sites and I can then click on to sign up at the various sites. Basically it is to profect my user name and identity so that no one else can register Wizardgold and use it nefariously. I see there will be a Facebook name thing happening this weekend also. Will you be getting your name registered. Will there be people doing bad things to try a bit of Facebook cyber squatting, I wonder.

With the new 2.8 WordPress, last night I updated most of my sites. Only with one of them do I have a problem. The text is not showing up in the posts on the site yet are still there in the database. I have exported out the posts also to keep them safe while I do what I have to to sort the problem out. Weird that it only messed up on one of my sites.

As I say in the podcast there will be no Round table meeting this evening. Mostly because of the fact I am working until 10pm and the rest is due to it seeming that it has all been done in the other podcasts. I listened to IMP, Mac OSKen and MacBreak Weekly and Vexed Tech podcasts and there is not much more to say. So I will stick to the Mac 20 Questions style of podcast which is about real users using the computer for real.
