Jon Maier, CEO of Blue Microphones joins Todd and Don on the TPN CES live coverage. He showed off three new microphones at Blue.

The Mikey Digital is an improved microphone you can attach to iPhone and iPad. Being digital, you can do things inside the mic, like a 3-position switch. You can get a low gain, high gain, or an automatic mode. There is an input to the Mikey, where you can now use it as a lav mic input or a line input.

The Tiki is a USB plug-in device to enhance the microphone. The Tiki contains intelligent signal processing so that strange noises, such as typing on a keyboard, is ignored. Noise cancelling, EQ, and intelligent mute to understand this is not a voice and mutes it. It’s a great device for note-taking USB.

Finally, the studio-grade Spark Digital is a condenser pro mike, meant to plug into an iPad or USB port. The Spark comes with a shock mount stand. It comes with the cable to connect to the iPad and USB wih headphone out.

All mics are expected to be available in spring. $59 for Tiki, $99 for the Mikey Digital and $199 for the Spark Digital.

uPNP’s Alan Messier joined the CES TPN Live coverage to talk about how they are standardizing newer technology. Things like adding your refrigerator and your TV. uPNP also worked with DLNA, broadband forum, and more.

The mission of the Universal Plug and Play Forum is to make sure you can connect seamlessly. For instance, your smart phone most likely has uPNP inside. WiFi protected setup, AV sharing, open ports for programs like Skype, TV control (remote control), all use the uPNP standard.

zBoost came back on the TPN Live CES show this year to talk about their new products. zBoost by Wi-Ex is a range of signal extenders that improve cell and mobile phone coverage.

Sharon Cuppett, VP of Wi-Ex, joined Todd and Don on their newest version - zBoost 4G-V, a signal booster for 4G Verizon with dual band and tri-band down the line. zBoost also showed off the zBoost zForce, an in-car booster.

The antenna is magnetic, so you can set it on your car, or get it professionally installed. The zForce will increase the signal up to 10x.

Steven Choo, CEO of Toon Boom joined the CES TPN Live show. He showed off an iPad product, and how easy it is to create animations.

Toon Boom powers a lot of the video you see now. Simpsons, Sponge Bob, and many other cartoons have used the engine.

We saw Toon Boom Draw, their iPad app. You can create a simple animation within seconds.

Toon Boom Doodle, is a product that is only $29.

Netgear was back on the TPN CES Live show this year. They are looking at how you connect to your routers and the new Netgear N-900 Router.

The N-900 has the ability to not only connect to all your devices – whether computer, mobile, smart TV or appliances. They also introduced the Media Storage router. It’s like a NAS and router in one. A 2 TB drive is inside this device to make central storage for all your devices.

They did a survey and found at least 7 devices are now connected to your router nowadays. The N-900 speeds then help carry that load.

Overall, Netgear had eight new products they introduced at CES. They also talked about PowerLine products (distributing data through your electrical outlets). They are coming out with a 500mb/sec version.

I'm Watch

While we were at the Venetian, we ran into I’m Watch. They have the world’s first smart watch. Not an enclosure of an iPod, but an actual watch.

This is a small, ergonomic watch, with a similar interface to a smart phone. In multiple colors, you can get a watch to match your fashion.

You can make a call from the watch (paired to Bluetooth). You can do the “Dick Tracey” method, as there is a speaker and microphone on the match.

The watch is a 240×240 on 1.54 inch screen. The watch has 64 MB or 128 MB of memory. You can store contact information, songs, or other programs. Battery life is around a day.

I’m Watch was a CES Innovation award winner.

I’m Watch starts at $329 (pre-order). There is an online market for apps, with an SDK already released.

iConcepts has come out with the invisible Keypad – a plastic overlay that gives your phone a tactile feel. This is perfect for people that have bigger fingers or has a problem seeing the screen.

The invisible keypad is a full case with overlay. Where the on-screen keyboard displays, you will see a series of raised plastic bumps. Those are markers for your fingers.

If you choose portrait or landscape, you will have to choose the proper insert. Just switch the plastic so you can feel the keys in landscape mode.

Additionally, the invisible keypad case has a back that slides out a bit. It gives you more room to hold, so you can take a better photo. The plate also separates your hands a bit more so you can see the screen better.

Vertix will hit the North American market for about half the retail price of conventional motorcycle communications gear at CES2012. They are looking for a $160 price range.

Today for business Monday, we look at a way you can put your iPad to work collecting information from people. ICaputre kiosk is an app that you can do just that.

With the iCapture Kiosk, you can make different types of forms and questionnaires. You can collect email, names, phone numbers for text promotions, and more. You can even give out coupons.

If the kiosk is not in a place readily available for WiFi, it doesn’t matter. The data will collect on the iPad until you can connect up.

iCapture Kiosk saves on a server, which you can then download to a CSV format, or import into your MailChimp or Constant Contact list. The API is also available so you can import it into your proprietary system.

Built to TYLT. They looked at the car charger cable, and wanted to make it look cool. That is what the TYLT charger is all about.

They have cables for all devices, with tangle-free cords.

TYLT also has a 1800 mA battery charger for your on-the road charger. Plug in the built-in cable and charge up.

The Power Plan is a 5200 mA plug that can charge an iPad up to 30%. These can replace those wall warts that you plug your USB device into. So you use this like you would plugging your phone or iPad into the wall, but it also charges the internal battery so you can continue to charge while looking for another outlet, or on the go.

TYLT also has iPhone cases with a lens cover for your iPhone. The Cush is a designer case.

Most important, you can file a complaint if the caller is harassing you, right from the phone.

This app is for Android or Blackberry users. iPhone launch will be Q2. They are also looking at VoIP solutions.

In today’s car, there is a plug that mechanics use to diagnose problems with your car. You could always plug something in to get information. Mavizon Tech about their new Mavia dongle.

Mavia connects to the car diagnostic port (the ODB-II port). It can read the diagnostics, ask your friends on social networks if they know an answer, and also find a mechanic to find the solution.

Mavia is also a GPS receiver to provide location and technical information. The data is sent back to www.mymavia.com. You can then log in to view.

If you have a kid and want to know where they are, log in and locate. You can also get multiple pieces of information. There are Android and iPhone client apps to keep you in touch.

Mavia is in a beta test, so no pricing yet (expected $200 MSRP). The device will be available from retail outlets later in the year.

Magellan recently showed of the Roadmate RV, a specialty GPS unit made for recreational vehicles. This isn’t the typical GPS device you would place in your car, but a very specialized unit made specifically for the RV. For instance, automodile drivers don’t generally have to worry if their car will fit on a particular road.

At the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Andy Smith of TPN got a look at the new Roadmate RV. This GPS unit will let the driver know about specific road conditions based on the size of their vehicle, such as if the road is too narrow or if there are low bridges. It can also direct the user to RV friendly campgrounds.

The Roadmate RV has a large 7 inch screen. Users can also uncheck their vehicle profile and switch the unit to their car for standard navigation. You can find more about the fautures and pricing by watching the video below and also by visiting the Magellan web site.

Geek News Central Special Media: Canon Shows Off New Camcorders

Canon was recently at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to show off a new line of camcorders. There are six new cameras in the Vixia line and the cool new feature is built-in WiFi. With the WiFi users can now not only transfer their video to computers and other devices, but even upload and post it to places like Facebook and YouTube. With this new ability comes a new app called “Movie Uploader” that will allow users to seemlessly handle all of their high-def video.

The new line of Canon cameras also allows users the choice of recording in AVCHD or MP4 format. The cameras also have enhanced low-light performance, plus a new user interface, better stabilization, and higher zoom. The entry level R series starts out at $349, so these cameras are affordable for average users, but go up to a level that is acceptable to professionals as well.

Geek News Central Special Media: Fulton Innovation Brings Wireless Charging Everywhere

Fulton Innovation was a founding member of the Wireless Power Consortium and were recently at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to show off their latest, no pun intended, innovations. They are working to unify a standard for wireless charging of all of your devices from phones to tablets and more. The standard is called Qi (pronounced “Chi”) and it will bring together all of the makers of your favorite mobile devices and allow them all to charge wirelessly in a standards-based way. Users will be able to charge a smartphone simply by sitting it on a table, or in many other ways.

Fulton Innovation is looking at a lot more than just phones and tablets though. They are looking at entering your kitchen with such things as wireless blenders that will charge right on your countertop, induction ranges, even charging your electric car by simply parking it in a particular space.

All of this futuristic sounding technology has been developed and was on display at CES. Now Fulton Innovation is working with third-party manufacturers to get their technology built and out into the marketplace. Geek News Central Special Media: The Logitech Cube Presenter / Mouse

Logitech picked up an Innovation award at the recent Consumer Electronics Show for their new Cube, which is a combination mouse and presenter. It acts as a wireless mouse while being used on any surface, but when picked up it becomes a presenter, or remote control, for your presentation. The Cube charges via USB and has an on/off switch to save battery life.

Logitech was light on specs in their interview with TPN, but it’s a mouse so there probably isn’t really a lot to say. For the most information ou can get about product such as this, you simply need to see the video of the Cube in action, which is posted below. Geek News Central Special Media: The New Line of Turtlebeach Headphones

Turtlebeach, famous for their audio products, has a new line of headphones designed for use with tablets and smartphones, and geared specifically towards mobile gaming. They had the whole lineup on display recently at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and Scott Ertz of F5 Live and The Tech Podcast Network got a tour.

The M3, for instance, is super portable because it is so flexible and foldable. It will retail for $39.95. The M5 is slightly larger, but has the same sleek design and will cost the user $49.95. There is also a pair of full-size gaming headphones, the X32 and X42,both of which are compatible with the Xbox 360 and are now dual-band, unlike their predecessors. MXL joined Jeffrey powers last month at the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas to talk about their new Tempo Microphones. The new Tempo Mics work with both laptop and desktop computers, but they are also compatible with the iPad. That last part is key because the iPad isn’t typically able to work with microphones due to power issues. However, the Tempo works with the lower power by connecting with the camera connector kit, which requires an adapter, but that’s a cheap price to pay for this ability.

The Tempo will turn your iPad into a mobile recording station, allowing podcasters and others to travel much lighter than was previously possible. These are condenser mics, not dynamic, so it will need power. This will provide much better sound than the built-in microphone that Apple provides. Of course, if you are just doing video chat then that mic will be fine, but for serious recording this is the first real option to come along. To top it off, the MXL Tempo retails for $79.95. If you’ve ever wondered how your gadgets talk amongst themselves to successfully play music from your PC through a media streamer, you’ll be interested in this interview with Dr Alan Messer, President of the UPnP Forum.

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is the standard by which IP networked gadgets advertise their services and intercommunicate. Formed in 1999, nearly all the big vendors are signed up with over 1000 members, the notable exception being Apple who tend to do their own thing. Think Intel, Samsung, Nokia, Philips.

The most common example of UPnP (AV spec) is DLNA-certification which governs media management, discovery and control which effectively how music is streamed from one device to another. Set-top boxes know how to use different router ports based on UPnP techniques. Almost any consumer device attached to the network in the home will have some element of UPnP built-in.

The Altair Semiconductor Company specialises in 4G and LTE wireless chipsets for the mobile telecoms industry. Andy and Courtney chat to the CEO of Altair to find out more more about the transition to the latest wireless standards.

4G, LTE and mobile broadband were all key technologies at CES this year, with products incorporating 4G announced from Motorola, Samsung, Nokia and LG, to name but a few. When compared to the relatively slow penetration of 3G, 4G uptake is happening much faster and it’s even surprising the industry. Verizon is expected to have most of the USA covered by the end of 2012. China and India are not far behind with major deployments.

Tablets and smartphones are driving the market but Altair’s chipsets are included in 4G dongles, MiFi-type units and wireless broadband routers.

LifeStation is a pill box that will let you know it’s time to take your medication. It’s a web-based tool that will inform people if someone doesn’t take their medication. The pill box will start to blink on the medication that it’s time to take. If you don’t take it in time, it will begin to beep. After a while, it will then notify care-givers, so they can check in on you. If the user tampers with the box, the care-giver will be notified. It’s ready for travel with a battery pack inside. The pill box had compartments for up to 4 doses a day and once full holds a week’s worth of pills. Prices start at $50 a month for a subscription, with Medic-aid possible. While at the Mercedes-Benz booth, we learned about Mbrace2. This is their newest generation of connected car technology.

With fully loaded apps in the Mbrace2, they put the car into the cloud. Mercedes-Benz has customized versions of popular apps, which include Google Local Search, Yelp, Morningstar Finance, and others. Search will be rather easy, and results will show pictures from Panerameo or Google street view.

Mercedes-Benz also wants to protect drivers and pedestrians. Therefore, the data entry will be disabled. You will have limited functionality.

The center control panel will have all your information. the system will update through the cloud. With GPS technology, Mbrace2 has many ways to keep you connected to your car. Bring the relevant services to your car.

Mercedes-Benz also has been working with Facebook to make a non-Facebook looking version. You can do limited functionality with this device for safety, but you can put together pre-canned messages, like “I will arrive at my destination in XX minutes.”

Mercedes-Benz hopes to have Mbrace available on all models starting in 2013. There will be a monthly subscription fee but the price has not been determined. There will be a complimentary trial period for new customers.

It’s just like Apple’s Airplay, Shodogg is a video delivery platform. It allows any smartphone fetch videos, then toss to any connected screen, then share with your friends.

Any screen that can connect to the web, iPad, PC, Set top box or more. iOS and Android devices. It’s in Alpha, March will beta iOS, then Android after.

You pair the device with an 8-digit code. The screen shows a QR-code for easy connection. Once your devices are linked, you can send video to them – Seamlessly. If you move to a device, the video will orientate to the system.

Vimeo, YouTube partners, with a Quicksilver partnership and more coming soon. Best part is they don’t have to be on the same LAN. So you could send video to someone in another house, city, state and country. Friends will be able to see the playlist, through social media outlets like Facebook.

Inside Digital Media: Apple’s Textbook & Education Plans – Part 1

A couple of months hence shall mark the 100th anniversary of the Titanic disaster. In response, I’ve been reading several books including Charles Lightoller’s memoirs, purchased from the Kindle store for ninety-nine cents. Lightoller was the ship’s senior surviving officer. His story is so incredible that fiction editors would likely reject the plot as too improbable. As playwright Oscar Wilde put it, “(audiences) will believe the impossible, but never the improbable”. More to the point, the experience of reading the e-book on an iPad via Kindle’s App hints at the potential for Apple’s iTextbooks and iTunes- U initiatives.

At age thirteen Lightoller apprenticed aboard a four-masted “three-skysail yarder.” Being an unfamiliar term, I put my finger on “skysail” to summon iPad’s dictionary which described it as “a light sail above the royal”. The definition was not useful since I was also unfamiliar with the meaning of “royal” sails. Fortunately, iPad’s dictionary also provided links to Google and Wikipedia. The Wikipedia link connected to a full explanation including photographs and diagrams identifying all the sails of a clipper ship.

The ability of iPad’s dictionary to almost effortlessly connect to Wikipedia — or to “Google” unknown words — is a particularly helpful way for individuals reading e-books to learn unfamiliar nouns. For example, compare the Webster definition of a “buntline-hitch” to that of Wikipedia. (Is it any wonder that Internet users protested Congressional copyright bills that threaten viability of the Wikipedia?) Similarly, when Lightoller narrates an earlier shipwreck incident at the remote Île Saint-Paul, the Google Earth application permits readers to explore the island “virtually”.

It’s not the paper form-factor per se threatening obsolescence of conventional books. Instead, it’s the fact that they are isolated information silos. They cannot connect to the “infinite mind” of the Internet. Gradually they’ll become about as useful as a non-networked computer. Much like a handheld calculator, we’ll use them as a special purpose tool. For example, paper books will be convenient in environments that are physically menacing to tablet computers, such as a sandy beach, or an open boat.

Judged against the Kindle-App-on-iPad, e-book reading on Amazon’s monochrome Kindle fails to be a comparably transforming experience. First, the dictionary available on black & white Kindles does not easily connect to the Internet. There are no Google and Wikipedia links within the dictionary, whereas iPad provides such links for each looked-up term. Second, web browsing on a monochrome Kindle is cumbersome. Consequently, much like conventional books, the units are isolated information silos with the limited advantage of being able to hold multiple “books”.

No doubt Kindle Fire was developed partly to address the “information silo” limitation. However, I’ve delayed in buying a Fire on the presumption that initial models will have new product bugs which Amazon will likely correct in the future. Also, the lower $200 price suggests that it will not be as capable as an iPad and therefore provide less demonstrative insight into the full capabilities of e-books.

In time iPad and Fire will compete as “connected” e-book readers. Apple starts with superior hardware and software thereby enabling iPad to function better as a multipurpose unit. Thus, to Amazon’s disadvantage the iPad will likely be more attractive to App developers. However, Amazon will benefit from a lower price and the company’s greater skills at merchandising content. For example, many public domain Kindle books are free and the company also has a lending library for selected titles. Presently Amazon also leads Apple in the realm of self-publishing and is further down the learning curve in dealing with abuse. One example is filtering spammers who steal content (from the Web or elsewhere) and sell it at the Kindle store.

The revealed benefits of habitual e-book reading merely hint at the implications of Apple’s iTextbook and iTunes-U initiatives. Like Titanic, conventional publishing is already negotiating an alien ice-field, but immutable educators will have epitaphs reading something like “died age 30, buried age 80.” Part-2 of our analysis will address more specifically Apple’s likely impact on the future of textbooks and the teaching profession.

The unsightly profusion of mobile phone, tablet and other gadget chargers is a bane of modern life. Moving on, iPads are an easy target for thieves and corporate devices doubly so. They were recently at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas showing off their latest top-of-the-line 2 channel audio speakers. These aren’t speakers for the feint of heart. Each tower weighs in at 120 pounds.

CAT makes more than simple tower speakers though, they precision-make each speaker and can design them for almost any installation, including hidden in-wall speakers. Their custom-made speakers can be found anywhere from homes, to music studios, to mega yachts. All of that massive weight comes in handy to prevent any speaker vibration, which is a common issue in cheap speakers.
