Inside Digital Media: Knowing The Unknowable

Although he died four years ago, author Michael Crichton brilliantly anticipated future technologies and their implications through fiction. For example, the dinosaur cloning in his 1990 novel Jurassic Park preceding the first “real world” cloning of a sheep named Dolly in 1996. Without Crichton’s speculative story-telling, the significance of Dolly’s creation probably would have been underestimated by the public. Interestingly, YouTube hosts this ten minute Crichton interview produced in 1999 in which he discusses technological changes in the 21st century.

Twelve years later he’s already “missed” on two major predictions.

First, he did not believe readers would routinely use portable electronic screens, expect for reference books such as encyclopedias and dictionaries. He reasoned that if Bill Gates was unalterably habituated to printing paper copies – as the Microsoft founder was reported to have said — then the typical reader would also be unlikely to make a paradigm shift to portable screens.

Second, Crichton was concerned that prominent technological trends had already passed a point where they might foster opportunities for new competitors. Instead he sensed they were inducing an opposite effect whereby the applicable industries were becoming increasingly concentrated. He cited two examples.

One was computer software, which he implied would not likely escape Microsoft domination. A second was telecommunications where he forecast a steadily declining number of competitors. While he was obviously wrong about Microsoft, he may still be correct about the concentration of the telecommunications industry, particularly as it applies to cellular carriers which are now pretty much dominated by Verizon and AT&T in the United States.

But Crichton redeems his reputation toward the end of the interview. Basically, he conceded that all predictions must be qualified as speculative because “the future is unknowable.” The author provided a lucid illustration.

Imagine it is 1900 and someone from the future is describing 20th century for you. From your perspective, the United States had only recently closed its frontier and much of the country was still wild. You could only recently get across it by train. One-in-six women died in childbirth. Everyone was vulnerable to infectious diseases. Horse manure constrained the growth of cities. Great Britain was the country with the (1) highest living standard, (2) best educated populace, (3) most wealth, and (4) most stable currency.

Yet tomorrow’s visitor tells you airplanes shall become the basic form of long-distance travel enabling you to get to Europe overnight. On a typical weekday 10,000 airplanes are aloft and each is carrying a hundred or more people. Yet passengers are more bored than fascinated with viewing the earth from 30,000 feet. More commonly they complain about the food quality in flight. He would tell you that a handful of countries have thousands of bombs, each of which could destroy an entire city. Collectively the bombs may well be able to end all life on earth if they are ever used.

Similarly, cities would be bigger than you could ever imagine while only a few horses would be observed on their streets. Instead, most everyone would have an automobile, with air-conditioning, and electronic geo-navigation. Infections diseases would hardly ever lead to death for most adults. Mothers would rarely die in childbirth. Adults, and even children, would use electronic appliances enabling communications instantaneously with others in most any civilized area on the planet. All the nearly incomprehensible capabilities of radio, TV, and computers would be routine and portable.

As a listener from 1900 you would likely consider such predictions to be fanciful, at best. Even if you could accept them as true, the most important ones would also be the ones that were unexpected. The last point is Crichton’s essential message.

Whatever the changes in the 21st century, it is likely that the biggest ones will be surprising. In that context, presently it appears likely that we haven’t even seen the first one yet. Or, if we have, it is only incipient much like airplanes, electronic communications, and automobiles were in 1912.

But if it is incipient…what is it?

2003- Caldera International finished the acquisition of the Server Software and Services divisions of Santa Cruz Operation. They turned around and officially renamed to the SCO group. The focus was more to the UNIX platform. The SCO group was in a major lawsuit with Novell until Masrch 2010 when the courts ruled that Novell had the proper rights to the SCO properties in the Linux OS.

Why is the matter of who owns estimation in an agile project (or any type of project) a discussion that generates passion? In simplest terms, he who owns the estimate, owns the project agenda. The effect of having the wrong person or group “own” estimate can impact a wide range of behaviors and commitment. As we all know, budgets, estimates and plans are often construed as commitments, etched in stone, which may or may not make sense to those who actually have to design, code or test. The many forms of estimation are an integral part of the project landscape getting ownership right will have an impact on motivation, productivity and quality.

1980 – The machine was code named “Sara”. It was the Apple III and was planned to be the successor to the Apple II. However, the machine had enough failures that Apple had to re-launch this computer in August. Therefore, it was refered to as “Apple Failure III”. Then IBM came out with the PC and Apple switched gears with their Macintosh line. Apple III saw modest numbers before it was retired on April 24th, 1984.

The 90 minute movie was produced on a $60 million budget and although it’s first weekend only saw $42 million , the overall theatrical run brought in $487 million. Shrek was the first computer animated film to win an Academy Award (Best Animated Feature).

Last November we provided a seven minute video demonstrating how to easily watch any Internet video on a flat-panel TV. When I say easily, I really mean it. It annoys me when someone with specialized experience claims a new procedure for the uninitiated is “simple” when it really isn’t. So, let me clarify. For anyone who knows how to use an iPhone and a TV, the instructional video provided in the above hyperlink is truly easy to follow.

Only four items are required to get Internet video on your TV without wires: (1) a $99 AppleTV, (2) an iPhone-4s, iPad-2 or later model iPad, (3) a home Wi-Fi network, and (4) a flat panel TV capable of connecting the to the AppleTV appliance. Merely touching a single AirPlay icon and selecting the AppleTV display option enables you to “mirror” whatever is on the iPhone-4s (or applicable iPad) onto the TV screen.

It’s that simple. And, because it’s simple, it has huge implications for the television industry, including the Cable TV sector. Thus it is surprising the New York Times reported earlier this week that Time-Warner Cable’s CEO, Glenn Britt, is unfamiliar with AirPlay “although (he) loves Apple products.”

It must be really tough to run a major CATV company, because Britt is undeniably brilliant. He is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Dartmouth and a Phi Beta Kappa Key holder. He also earned a MBA from Dartmouth’s Tuck Business School where he sponsors the “Britt Technology Impact Series”.

But it is not just Dartmouth that recognizes Britt’s technological perspicacity. He was one of five corporate executives appointed by President Obama to a task force “charged with strengthening America’s economic competitiveness through leadership in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. He also championed Time Warner Cable’s $100 million philanthropic initiative to inspire students to pursue STEM-related education.”

While I realize anyone graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth is undeniably bright, I scratch my head when pondering how Inside Digital Media subscribers could become familiar with innovations as important as AirPlay and screen mirroring a full half-year ahead of such a person. I can only conclude that Britt reasons the near monopolistic control CATV and Telco operators hold over broadband Internet access implies Time-Warner Cable doesn’t need to worry about promptly adjusting to technological change. They can take their time.

Yet such artificial delays are damaging to the economic prosperity of the United States because they retard the pace at which innovation can be brought to market. Ultimately, other countries that don’t permit monopolies to throttle technological innovation merely to serve the isolated interests of the monopolists will pass us by.

What is Covenant Eyes Mobile?

Let’s start with the basics. Covenant Eyes is a browser that records your browsing habits on an iOS device and rates the “maturity” of the sites you visit. It works along with the desktop version of the software so once you have everything configured for your home computer you don’t need to configure the mobile browser. The mobile versions of the software are free with your monthly subscription to Covenant Eyes. It can be installed on multiple devices for no extra charge.

If you’re interested in knowing more about how Covenant Eyes works, visit their website. I want to focus on the browser for iOS rather than the service itself which I’ve reviewed in the past (check out the link above to my old blog).

How it Works

Once the app is installed enter your username and password and then start browsing. That’s it! Every time you visit a website it will be recorded and reviewed by Covenant Eyes and rated. You and/or your accountability partner will be able to see on the accountability report the “safety level” of the site. You can then use this to start a discussion about your Internet usage.

The browser works just like other third-party browsers on iOS and just like all the others it is also limited by the SDK. Bookmarks, multiple pages, zoom, etc. are all available but the much desired options to make it the default browser, import Safari bookmarks, and share links or add them to the homepage aren’t there. It’s frustrating but that is how Apple rolls.

There are two features that I really think Covenant Eyes needs in the iOS version. First, a panic button similar to the one found in X3 Watch. Being able to get a notification that you’re headed to a potentially offensive site (knowingly or unknowingly) is a great option. Second, it should require you to disable Safari. There is a reminder to do so but it really should just require that restriction to be enabled.

Covenant Eyes mobile has come a long way from its first release when it was slow, buggy, and crashed. It’s a more mature app now and I think with a few more refinements it could almost be the “perfect” app for mobile accountability.

2006 - Phantom Entertainment former CEO Timothy Roberts was accused of running a Pump and dump scheme on the Phantom console – a Game system that never came to market. In 2004, he hired a promoter to send faxes stating the Phantom system would ship January 2005. Of course that drove up stock prices in which investors could profit on, including Roberts and the promoter (who got 4 million shares of restricted stock)

1991- Tim Berners-Lee sets up HyperText Markup language (HTML) and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) at CERN. He put the protocol on a NeXTStep machine. The server was then launched onto the word wide web, effectively making this the first day you could get a website that could support more than text.

That is when CERN and Berners-Lee release the World Wide Web standard. However, there was a long way to go. It wasn’t until August 6th, that Berners-Lee put up the first webpage.

Today’s Productivity app is a game. Really? Well, not really. The game is a strategy game, so it tunes your mind, but whats so special about this app it it’s the first one that has been coded straight from the iPad.

Cargo Bot is the game. It’s a strategy game that has you moving boxes from one platform to the next. You have to program the machine with instructions. The least amount of instruction to put the boxes in proper order wins the round.

Codea Coding on iPad

Program an iPad app using Codea

Cargo Bot was coded using a program called Codea. Codea uses a vector graphics and imaging engine that can let you make anything from boxes to bugs. Characters for your brick busting game, or your 3rd person adventure game.

Codea also has a forum, filled with other coders putting together iPad apps. You can grab open source projects to make your own programs, or just learn the software. Codea is built on the Lua programming language. More important, you don’t need a Mac to create programs. All you need is an iPad.

The program cannot accept certain things like photos, JSON or XML just yet. Future releases could support these functions, to make it a really powerful creation engine.

I also show off a different type of stand. Octa Whale Tail is a suction cup stand that can affix to your iPad or a case (if it’s not porous). Put the base on, then push the button to add suction. In using the iPad this way, I felt this was more ergonomic and I could hold it a lot longer.

Best part – when I was sitting on the couch, I positioned the tail on my leg, and the iPad was setting upright more. That way, I could read, or watch a video without having to hold the tablet, and relax more.
