GPS BASICS YOU NEED TO KNOW
Marking a waypoint
What is a waypoint? – Waypoints are sets of coordinates that identify a point in physical space. Coordinates used can vary depending on the application. For terrestrial navigation these coordinates can include longitude and latitude.

Your car’s position – One of THE most important waypoints that you can utilize with a GPSr unit is not where you are going. In fact it is the point you most want to find after you find your geocaches. It is where your car is. Depending on the situation you are in when out in the wild there are many situations where a geocacher can lose their way and uncertainty can set in by not knowing where your car is. Always mark your car.
Trailhead – A trailhead marks the beginning and/or end of a trail. It is key in geocaching to be able to designate to a geocacher trailheads so easier parking and entrance into a trail system can be determined. It is also a key factor again when getting back to your automobile after geocaching.
POI – A point of interest, or POI, is a specific point location that someone may find useful or interesting. This could be anything from restaurants, rest areas, geographical interests, and more. Geocaches in regards to GPS units can be specified as only geocaches or as point of interests. They can show up graphically different depending on how they are designated.

Since POI are stored differently on a GPSr you can actually store more potential geocaches then as designated geocaches.

Tracking – Electronic Breadcrumbs

Tracks vs Routes – Routes and tracks are sets of GPS information designed to help you in your navigation. There are a few key differences to keep in mind when using routes and tracks.

Routes are pre-defined paths created from a group of location points entered into the GPS receiver in the sequence you desire to navigate them.
Location points can be user generated waypoints or points of interest that have been loaded from a map or from a Garmin program
Routes are created on the computer and/or on the device

Tracks act like breadcrumb trails, allowing you to see where you or another individual traveled in the past. This allows you to navigate a path previously taken.
Tracks contain track points, not waypoints or points of interest
There are two different types of tracks:
Active Track Log:
Contains track points for your current activity
Can be cleared at the start of a new activity
Can be set to wrap around (overwrite older track points as device runs out of memory)
Can be saved as a “Saved Track”
Saved Tracks
Created typically from the active track log
Can have a limit to the maximum amount of track points based on the device (for example: 250, 500, 10,000 track points maximum)
Creation can result in points being consolidated (on device) or truncated (from computer to device) depending on the source, to meet above device track point limitations
Creation can result in data removal based on the device (for example: date, time, speed and accessory data)
GPS Waypoint Projections
First thing to know about projecting a waypoint is that we need three pieces of data:
Origin Coordinates
Bearing
Distance

Find the Project Waypoint function on your GPSr unit. It will vary with each model. Put in the needed information and it will create a new waypoint to follow to.
