My secret is out - been experimenting with a tool that allows me to edit at 120% of realtime. And just forgot to take it out of overdrive before I encoded last night. By noon I had it replaced, but by that time most of you probably had already downloaded the episode. - so my apologies for the error - although some in the Northeast US thought it was an improvement. Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST WiFi in the Air by Andrew McCaskey I have to welcome the addition of WiFi to the Delta fleet, and certainly hope that United responds in kind. This is the sort of amenity that will attract many if not most business travelers- and other than offering some sort of primary power in coach so that a battery swap is not required on long flights, there’s not much more that could keep a business traveler happy. How different, indeed from the airline menus from flights from the 1960’s and 1970’s collected at Northwestern University Just different sorts of competition. I’m glad that they are blocking VoIP to keep some semblance of quiet for those who want to sleep on the flight - and this is one uplift that I’m happy to pay for the increased productivity along the way. Femtocells - Not a Minute Too Soon by Andrew McCaskey It would almost be enough to convert me to a Sprint phone subscriber, if it were not for the iPhone and family connections that have us firmly tied to AT&T. Even though we are less than a mile from cellular towers serving traffic on a major interstate highway, the cell phone service inside the house is a joke. Of course, when you choose to live inside a Faraday Cage of aluminum siding, you can live with the consequences of your decision. And, with luck, the XM satellite can see just the right portion of the sky from a bookcase through a bedroom window on the second floor. But with bad luck, your AT&T cellphone will be just about flat unless you are at an open window facing the tower. The Sprint Femtocell $99 box +$15 per month uplift would be just the solution - positioned in an upstairs window or attic with clear view of the cell tower, repeating inside the aluminum silo that is our home. There have got to be millions of homes with this problem (most built in the 1960’s and 1970’s) and it may be one of the Golden Arrows (along with WiMax) that can pull Sprint’s fortunes out of the fire. I hope so, (since I am an EVDO customer with Sprint). And I hope AT&T gets their Femtocell act together soon. 3D printing Service - Shapeways Watch the You Tube Episode Click to view videos submitted or recommended by other SDR podcast listeners. . . Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST Site Repairs by Andrew McCaskey At a certain point, the house of cards that gets built up over time needs a major overhaul. And, that’s about the situation with the Wordpress template and presentation that forms the delivery framework for the SDRNews podcast. Since the podcast started, I have used Wordpress as the blogging engine for the RSS feed generation, with the iPodCatter plug-in. I have resisted the temptation to upgrade to PodPress - and from what I have recently read that has turned out to be a good decision. On the other hand, layer upon layer of visual and text has piled up - and not in a good way. So, with the help and suggestions from a long term listener / reader, I’m trying some small modifications this week, and with luck will be able to get the site greatly improved during the month of August - from both a readability and usability standpoint. If you have suggestions on the layout or features that you would like to see, please write. More Thoughts on Seesmic by Andrew McCaskey The best of intentions were to record Seesmic versions of the production process this evening, but he combination of lighting, ground loops and fan noise were not lining up in a favorable direction. There seems to be a lot of activity on Seesmic, but not much focused activity on the public timeline. This is probably due to several factors - not the least of which is the generation gap as far as what is interesting content, and the timing (time of day) that the episodes are posted. There seem to be a number of working professionals and freelancers on during the day - with more random conversations and shoutouts in the evening hours. I expect that it will also change as the seasons change- The objective, as I mentioned on the air, is to see if there is some improvement that can be made to the SDRNews audience who listen at their desk or laptop machine at some point during the day, as opposed to the commuter. What’s the role (if any ) of video in the SDRNews operation ? or should the energy be directed at other audio programming and coverage ? Seesmic Experiment by Andrew McCaskey Today’s video is a continued experiment in the user generated site Seesmic. I am not sure if the Seesmic demographic is a good match to the SDRNews audience, but like the ongoing adventures looking at YouTube I think that it will be a great opportunity to try some different approaches to new media. One of the areas that I am struggling with is the transition from podcasting to “New Media” in all forms. Podcasting is a smooth transition for most people in my age group who grew up on radio and most particularly radio as the principal source of news while commuting. An appreciable number of SDRNews listeners consume the program at their desks - and as video (user produced content) begins to grow, I think there is some place for this medium in the mix, without degrading the experience. Right now, I have the Seesmic program broken into four segments. Is that about right ? or would you prefer a single program slightly longer than the regular audio program ? How do you see video in the mix for SDRNews ? Click to view videos submitted or recommended by other SDR podcast listeners. . .
