The Final Straw - VoIP on Airplanes by Andrew McCaskey The Phweet VoIP system that passes short URL through Twitter connections is all that’s required, along with the Flash plugin in the browser. But, much as the comments surrounding telecommuting a few days ago, the fact that the job can be done remotely is a separate question from should the job be done remotely. In a similar manner, the fact that VoIP is possible, is, in this case irrelevant. Business travel - with the Bose headphones, laptop, iPod and DVD - is an exercise in attempted insulation at any rate. The idea of a seatmate railing on about his weekend golf game, travel plans, deal negotiation or office gossip is close to the final straw. Even in business or first class, the unintended consequences of touchscreens and video games are sufficient to allow the guy in the row behind you to keep punching you in the seat back for the entire flight. The only upside from all this airline turmoil is that the extra weight will force United to finally remove those bulky VCR’s from under the seats on Boeing 777’s that steal the underseat room of every third seat. You can only hope. I guess there is some upside. When we finally go to economy standing flights (straphangers) maybe the VoIP background chatter will pass for in flight entertainment.
