LED Datalinks by Andrew McCaskey LED’s are the only visible light source that can be keyed on and off rapidly enough to handle data at rates approaching 250Mb/sec. – and with spectral filtering, those sorts of speeds have been reached during trials. From the articles, it looks like this is still a simple on-off keying at extremely rapid rates. It’s going to get really interesting when more sophisticated signalling gets incorporated, with the equivalent of frequency shift keying between light frequencies , resulting in a mix of colors that our eyes would interpret as white light, but would in fact be a spread spectrum signalling scheme. Now that would be a real way to send a message to oncoming cars. Although visual short range digital signalling to other drivers has already been perfected. Probably for the past hundred years or so.
