Hacking the Toll Road
by Andrew McCaskey
The MIT article on hacking Toll Road transponders points out several issues for concern.
Many interference complaints to broadcast television in the 1950’s and 1960’s actually traced back to poor manufacturing and design. The same tendency to save a few cents on a part or omit code for at least some protection to script kiddie levels of hacking continue, apparently, in all sorts of designs for various computer and wireless devices.
The more serious effect, however, is the assumption by the public and the legal system that complexity equals security - that something that is obviously “high-tech” is going to be inherently stable, secure, and worthy of trust.
Bad guys seem to be on top of the technology, looking for any advantage to give them a momentary edge. For example, the value of the cloned Toll Road iPass ID is not the few dollars in stolen tolls, but the ability to “prove” that you and your vehicle were 30 miles away from the crime scene.
Anyone traveling who does not use a VPN on any open wifi node is asking for trouble. In places like O’Hare you will see scores of rogue “Free WiFi”, “OpenWiFi” just waiting for the unsuspecting to check a bank balance.
War driving in any neighborhood will detect many “encrypted” wifi networks, 90% of which are on WEP, known to be easily hacked for a number of years.
The bad guys know the tricks, but the public is the loser.

The Final Straw - VoIP on Airplanes
by Andrew McCaskey
The deterioation of the flying experience for the past thirty years is fast closing on the zenith. Just when you think that it could not get worse, along comes the confirmation that, once again, bits are bits.
The Phweet VoIP system that passes short URL through Twitter connections is all that’s required, along with the Flash plugin in the browser.
But, much as the comments surrounding telecommuting a few days ago, the fact that the job can be done remotely is a separate question from should the job be done remotely. In a similar manner, the fact that VoIP is possible, is, in this case irrelevant.
Business travel - with the Bose headphones, laptop, iPod and DVD - is an exercise in attempted insulation at any rate. The idea of a seatmate railing on about his weekend golf game, travel plans, deal negotiation or office gossip is close to the final straw.
Even in business or first class, the unintended consequences of touchscreens and video games are sufficient to allow the guy in the row behind you to keep punching you in the seat back for the entire flight.
The only upside from all this airline turmoil is that the extra weight will force United to finally remove those bulky VCR’s from under the seats on Boeing 777’s that steal the underseat room of every third seat. You can only hope.
I guess there is some upside. When we finally go to economy standing flights (straphangers) maybe the VoIP background chatter will pass for in flight entertainment.

Changing Communications Modes
by Andrew McCaskey
I had a quick Twitter message this evening from Tim Sullivan Selling Geek Podcast , concerning the Death of VoiceMail.
That linked me back to a Techcrunch article from about six weeks ago, where Michael Arrington wrote that
Voicemail is dead. Please tell everyone so they
ll stop using it.
.. in the mid-nineties voicemail was an important productivity tool.
But now an increasing number of people are just plain avoiding voicemail. It takes much longer to listen to a message than read it. And voicemail is usually outside of our typical workflow, making it hard to forward or reply to easily.
The services that really make voicemail more usable are those that convert voicemail into text and then send it to you via email or SMS ( Spinvox, PhoneTag Yap and Jott, for example).
For now most people don
t have voicemail transcription services. So think before you voicemail, more and more people just find it annoying.
I am beginning to see the evolution - I was a Twitter detractor up until my “Road to Columbus”
conversion at Podcamp Ohio. Business communication is changing very, very rapidly.
If you are in a fixed location, just opening up a few Skype chat windows to the folks you really need to communicate with. Or, if you are mobile, monitor their Twitter streams or set up a private Twitter group with direct messages.
Lots to learn and a moving target. But changing, for sure.

TPN Roundtable Saturday August 23
by Andrew McCaskey
This Month’s TPN Roundtable will be held in a live GoToMeeting session on Saturday August 23 at 1:00PM Pacific / 4:00PM Eastern.
There were several TPN members in attendance at the Las Vegas New Media Expo, and the TPN Roundtable is a great way to get their first hand impressions of the conference - and insight into the world of podcasting a new media from a business and technology perspective.
If there were one word to characterize this year’s NME, it would be “stretch” . I’ll be talking about that on Saturday.

New Media Expo on the Ropes
by Andrew McCaskey
The podcasting world had a bit of a shock today with the publication of a blog post from Tim Bourquin, Founder of the New Media Expo, where he seriously questioned the viability of the Trade Show industry in the changing economy.
The present economy is hard on everyone. Show attendance was down due to the move to Las Vegas, and as I mentioned in an earlier post the prices for cab transport, food, drinks and everything were markedly increased, just since CES in January 2008. I am gathering the cash for CES 2009 - as I expect it will be rugged.
I am not attending the Gnomedex conference this year. I started in 2002, and have not missed a single year until this one. Conference fatigue, back to back with NME and general expense of flight, transport, hotel and event. I’m going to miss the opportunity, but I had to choose - and I chose New Media Expo.
Some of those commenting on TIm’s post directly noted that there were cities in the Midwest that would almost kill for the type of event like the New Media Expo.

Windows Tipping Point
by Andrew McCaskey
This is the Windows tipping point.
First of all, we had the recent discussion on laptops as the emerging platform of choice for consumers as well as business users.
Secondly, the probability that the needs of consumers and businesses will be met with a simpler machine, exemplified by the rise of the Netbook - a LInux based , affordable system that provides adequate performance of many tasks that address net based apps and day to day tasks.
Third - the decision to put Linux in the boot ROM on motherboards from major manufacturers, in an instant on option that allows functionality and the choice of continuing to Firefox or booting Windows (Vista). Guess which one is fastest.
Add in hand held computers, otherwise known as iPhones or Blackberries to skim off the top and bottom of the enterprise and small business marketplace.
Add in the sad and sorry saga of Vista over the past 18 months, and the movement of the high end to Apple hardware and OSX for all but the most demanding applications or those working in a boxed in IT environment.
The sum of all that means very simply that the course correction has been made. It will take years to run to the conclusion, but this was the tipping point that marked the pendelum reverse.

Now, the News
by Andrew McCaskey
The latest Pew Internet Trust survey shows that the majority of Americans still get their news from Television.
That, in itself is a bit frightening. If you Tivo the news from NBC or CBS - or for that matter, CNN you will be amazed to see how little of the thirty minutes actually contains news footage or items being read. The wall to wall commercials are just the start.
I can’t help but feel that these surveys - in fact all surveys that are telephone based are so deeply flawed that they are all but useless in measuring the population younger than about forty years of age.
How many thirty somethings and below that you know have a landline ? That group is almost certainly being undercounted.
How many busy middle aged people refuse to answer surveys (me included) after one sample that asks for just a few minutes of time and twenty minutes later you are getting close to the end ?
I fear that the Pew Internet survey is not giving a true picture at all - except for the
”
a sizable group of more engaged, sophisticated and well-off people that use both traditional and online sources to get news. ”
To which we’d all like to think we belong.

Early Notes on New Media Expo
by Andrew McCaskey
First a practical comment: McCarren does it right as far as WiFi is concerned. As I Tweeted earlier today, there was more
than ample bandwidth to watch some Seesmic and get some of the show prep done before leaving Las
Vegas.
The critical resource became primary power - as it always is. Even though the MacBook normally
has plenty of battery capacity, it’s always worthwhile ‘topping off before boarding the plane.
Live would probably be simpler if I carried an extra charged battery - but it seems that the
extra weight does not quite outweigh (so to speak) the benefits.
=======
Here are some initial thoughts on the New Media Expo.
Keynotes: A
Sessions: C minus, with a few A and B level sessions.
Hotel and convenience: B
Connections and Hallway Interactions: B
One gripe - the fact that the unit of exchange in Las Vegas is now the $20 bill.Cab to anywhere busts a twenty - maybe with a few bucks left over for change and regular tips.
And that is a change since January.
Meals, even in the modest restaurants busts another twenty.
With a little better planning, I could have done some of the social activity using the Monorail.
I would characterize this as the stretch year, reflecting the personal growth and business
maturity that almost everyone in the podcast space is making.
The bulk of the sessions ( with the exception of the excellent class on advanced audio editing) were pretty mediocre. In fact, after giving the presenter ten or fifteen minutes to show some value and get things moving, I walked out and spent time far more productively on the show floor and in hallway conversations.
Year 1- 2005 was the year of the technology enthusiast. Most of us caught up in the thrill of the
initial explosion in late 2004 traveled to Ontario full of enthusiasm, curiosity and voracious
desire to learn from each other. Audible.com set the tone with hacker black T-shirts proudly
proclaiming “I’m Recording This” and many were doing exactly that.
Year 2 - 2006 was all about how to monetize - and the emergence of various business models and
the tension between those who were pursuing podcasting as a hobby and those with business intent.
Year 3 - 2007 - was the year of video and business model consolidation. A number of companies had
come and gone, as well as business models and strategies. More of a corporate
IF there was ever an industry on internet time, it has to be podcasting. In less than three years
it has moved from a tech enthusiast niche of audio content through various trial and error
business models to the aspirational term and point of view captured in the term “New Media”.
This year’s New Media Expo (which I still want to call PME for Podcast Media Expo - even though
that was never the real name) was the stretch year.
I found the sessions to be irregular - a mix of the first three years content wise, but not connecting and only
a poor subset of previous Expos.
What did I like ? I thought each of the keynotes were interesting ,challenging and innovative. I enjoyed the technical depth of the advanced audio editing and video format sessions. I was challenged in the Infomercial session, and inspired by the Screencast story.
We rattled around a whole lot in Las Vegas Convention Center. But, on the whole it was a worthwhile trip.
I just hope that I can stretch in the right directions in new media.

New Media Expo - Las Vegas
by Andrew McCaskey
It’s a roll of the dice in Las Vegas, and the New Media Expo is placing a large bet.
In a bid to break out of the regional facilities in Ontario, CA, the show is in the Las Vegas Convention Center.
We had an outstanding keynote speaker to open - Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV. @garyvee . and that went a long, long way towards reversing the initial bad vibes of a relatively small convention rattling around in a few rooms in the North Hall of the LVCC.
Of course, the standard of comparison is the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) and the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), two of the largest shows that Las Vegas hosts each year.
The exhibitor quality is high, and the personal hallway meetups have been very , very encouraging.
More on the conference next week.

What’s Up With Sprint in Las Vegas ?
by Andrew McCaskey
Getting ready for the big New Media Expo - I’ve checked into the Hilton with great hopes to avoid the $13.99 per day internet charge by firing up the EVDO card from Sprint.
Well, it’s not going well. It shows both EVDO and 1rxtt but will not connect, and widely varying signal levels.
At least the Airport Express lets me create a secure hotspot so that I can run several devices without pulling cables or going on and off the network, resulting in multiple connect charges.
Lots of Twitter activity - and so I am trying to get the show up promptly and not get into the three hours later time warp, at least until tomorrow night.
That one is going to be the push-up, so the show may be erratically posted for air time Friday morning.
