Episode 69: An Interview with Daniel Park (Part 2)

Download media Play on iPhone
STOP ---- If you haven't listened to Part 1 yet, go back and do it NOW. During the first part of our interview with Daniel, Kim and I pretty much bombarded him with Camtasia Studio questions. In the second part, we talked more about his book, Camtasia Studio 5: The Definitive Guide and also about what he's been up to with dappertext LLC. nbsp; After he gave us a bit of a scare by keeping silent when we assured our audience that we had NOT chased him away during Part 1 and had returned for Part 2, he answered some of the following questions: What prompted you to leave Tech Smith and start dappertext LLC? When did you write the first version of The Definitive Guide and how many have you written? What audience did you write the book for? What type of services does dappertext offer? Daniel and his wife, Maria, moved to Maria's native country of Spain. Since employment in Spain generally depends on the process of training for a trade or field of endeavor at an early age, the most appealing employment prospect for him was starting his own business. Can you imagine not wanting to flip burgers at Mickie D's?????? After taking the plunge, he never looked back and has been extremely satisfied with his decision. Being a small (and I do mean small) business owner myself, I agree with him 100%. I've never gotten so much satisfaction and earned so little money for so much work. Hey, it's gotta be worth it....right? Daniel wrote his first Definitive Guide to go along with Camtasia Studio, version 3, during a visit to the U.S. to explore treatment for his young son, Ruben, who began exhibiting symptoms similar to those of autism. While he was in the U.S., Wordware Publishing approached him about doing a tutorial type book on Camtasia, which he decided to do. nbsp;He has since updated the book twice to cover versions 4 and now version 5. Since Tech Smith has been putting out a whole number version of Camtasia Studio on a yearly basis, he has been pretty busy with updates. Wordware gave Daniel a lot of freedom in choosing the format and audience. He wanted the book to be a reference guide; a working tutorial with exercises; a tip guide; and a classroom manual. Having used the book myself, I can tell you that he succeeded on all accounts! The book also contains a companion CD with all the software a reader needs to complete the exercises in the book. Other than services surrounding Camtasia, dappertext also does copywriting, technical writing, translation, voiceovers, videography. Daniel considers anything that falls under the umbrella of corporate communications to be part of the services he offers. Aside from the services he offers through dappertext, Daniel the the most prolific contributor to Tech Smith's Camtasia forum and has also just begun production of a newsletter called The Screencaster which is filled with tips, tricks and information for anyone who is exploring the use of screencasting (creating digital recordings of computer screen outputs) in their business or personal endeavors. nbsp;As a subscriber and new user of Camtasia, I highly recommend The Screencaster. Daniel and his family will be moving back to the United States in the near future where educational options for children with special needs are more numerous. If anyone here in the U.S. has or has had a satisfying personal experience with a school district that provides those services, Daniel would really appreciate hearing from you. If you're in need of any of the services he offers through dappertext LLC, he'd like to hear from you also. An advantage of having a business like dappertext is that he is able to operate it successfully from anywhere in the world. You can visit Daniel online at www.dappertext.com or you can send him an e-mail if you have school district information you can share, or if you'd like to learn more about his services.

Episode 68: An Interview with Daniel Park, Author of ‘Camtasia Studio 5: The Definitive Guide’

Download media Play on iPhone
Kim and I have recently started experimenting with Camtasia 5 by Tech Smith to create video tutorials. You can see an example of our first effort in the previous post from Kim, Choosing Business Technology Tools. This week's show was especially fun for me because I was able to use intro/exit music created by Diezelfitter, the band I'm in with my husband, Rick. Appropriately enough, the snippets were taken from "Chicken Train" by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. We performed it together as a band for the very first time at a wedding reception last month. When I say it was for the first time, I mean the first time ANYWHERE....we've never even done it during practice. My husband, Rick aka Nick Thomas, our lead singer and guitar player, has been playing it for years but drummer Gary aka Hector and guitar player Chuck aka Eric Richards had never even heard of it! We did a pretty good job. If you want to see the whole performance, check us out on Diezelfitter's band website. Moving right along...I met Daniel via e-mail when I discovered that the companion CD in the back of my copy of his book was cracked. I hadn't even opened it yet! It probably got cracked while I was reading it and I just hadn't noticed. Daniel was kind enough to help me get a replacement and since I've been using his book to help me learn Camtasia, I invited him to be a guest with Kim and me on VFTC. He so kindly accepted and even called us from his home in Huelva, Spain! His wife, Maria, is a native Spaniard and when the two married, they moved to a location near her hometown. Kim and I were excited to have Daniel with us to discuss all things Camtasia. We started out by having him tell us about his background as a tech writer and trainer with Tech Smith. Daniel was initially hired as a consultant to produce training videos for using their new screen capture software, Camtasia. He enjoyed the project so much and saw the potential of Camtasia as a business tool that he joined the company as an employee. After several years, he left Tech Smith to found his own consulting company, dappertext LLC. He never left Camtasia behind, however, and still spends a majority of his consulting time helping people use the software. During the first part of our interview, Daniel shared some background on Camtasia with Kim and me by answering some of the following questions: What does it do? Who is it for? How hard is it to learn? What equipment does someone need to be able to use it? Daniel also offered some great tips for getting the most benefit from Camtasia. If you're new to Camtasia, or even if you've never used it but are looking for a software package to help you create video tutorials, marketing content or product demonstrations, this is the show you want to hear! Once you listen to Part 1, you'll want to hear more about Daniel, dappertext LLC and his book in Part 2 (which I will have posted within the next week). SO....sit back, put the headphones on...and listen to the Chix as they talk with Daniel Park about all things Camtasia!

If you didn't listen to Part 1.....then go do it NOW....then come back and listen to Part 2. You'll be glad you did. Episode 66: Interview with Warren Whitlock (Part 1)

What can we say about Warren Whitlock? Can we call him the Twitter Man? We can certainly call him an enthusiastic guest! Warren is the co-author of The Twitter Handbook with Coach Deb. The Twitter Handbook is their attempt to explain Twitter, who uses and and what they use it for. If you're unfamiliar with Twitter, you'll find more information about it in The Twitter Handbook. Some of the topics you'll find at: What Twitter is all about Why people tweet FAQ's about Twitter #38; the Twitterverse Glossary How best to communicate with people on Twitter How to find and reply to those @ messages sent directly to you How people are making money by using Twitter Where to download the most popular resources to use with Twitter The dangers and the future of Twitter and the Twitterverse Kim and I had several questions for Warren and he had plenty of answers! What IS Twitter? Why would I want to use it? Can I search Twitter for specific Tweets (messages) without having to read ALL of them? How did Warren get started with Twitter How does he have time to tweet? Needless to say, Warren promotes Twitter as a wonderful networking tool and believes that the time he spends on Twitter saves him time he's previously spent at face-to-face networking events where he may have collected a few business cards but may have completely missed meeting the people who can really add to his network. He's also a great believer in the Rule of Reciprocity. "What" you may be asking, "is the Rule of Reciprocity?" Very simply, it's the obligation to give back. For more information on this and other methods of persuasion, Warren recommends reading material by Dr. Robert Cialdini, PhD, president of Influence at Work. When we come back for Part 2, Warren shares more about The Twitter Handbook and more of his experiences with online networking.
